Following a 3 year run of Windows 7, Microsoft released Windows 8 in the fall of 2012. Due to it’s departure from the traditional “start menu” Windows 8 remained “unpopular” and many users decided to “downgrade” to Windows 7. 1 year later Microsoft released Windows 8.1 to address some of the criticism of Windows 8, but they never did “fix” the start menu.
